Why didn’t women “invent anything”? “Good morning, future engineers and you women”

Women “invented nothing”? It’s no wonder we rarely hear about their achievements when misogynistic jokes are still considered funny. “From here I (don’t) greet my professor, who started the lecture with the words: Good morning, future engineers and you women,” wrote an Instagram user.

Ilona Kostecka has already gathered over 120,000 followers on her Instagram account. It contains content – as she writes – “about family without stereotypes”. The videos he publishes touch on popular family problems among Poles, of which we are sometimes not even aware. Her humorous and often even mocking style of speech means that her profile is visited by thousands of users every day.

Why haven’t women “invented anything”?

Recently she raised the issue of the Matilda effect. The post refers to the words of Janusz Korwin-Mikke, who wrote in a Facebook post a few years ago: “Women have invented practically NOTHING. Even a mop was invented by a man.” So what’s it like with these women in the world of science? No one should be surprised by the fact that there were, are and will be specialists. The problem is that they have been suppressed by men. Even today, some men make jokes about a woman’s place in society/family/home. What was it like years ago? So bad that many female scientists signed their names to male data in order for their work to gain any attention at all.

The author of the post listed some named examples. Among them was Mileva Marić, who was Einstein’s wife. It turns out that she corrected the scientist’s calculations, according to the preserved notes. Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, in turn, conducted open research on the composition of stars. Her thesis was not taken seriously by anyone. The situation changed when her opponent – a man – came to the same conclusions. Ilona Kostecka also mentioned the Council for Higher Education, Science and Innovation, which was convened by President Andrzej Duda in 2022. Its members included 18 men and not a single woman. The “oversight” was corrected and several representatives of the scientific community later joined the Council.

Ironically, completely unaware that it was because of such “Janus”, guided by stereotypes – that a woman can’t do anything on her own – our access to education and work was hindered and to this day we are not taken seriously and are still omitted in the role of experts

– we read in the post. The Matilda effect mentioned above comes from the name of Matilda Gage, one of the world’s most important feminists. This phenomenon describes the belittling of women in scientific circles and the attribution of their achievements by men.

“I wish men successful careers and ladies successful families”

There were a lot of comments under the post regarding the behavior of some men towards women, not hundreds or decades ago, but nowadays. The knowledge that these are real cases means that many people may have a knife in their pocket. We admit that we belong to this group. How brazen insults do some men still allow themselves?

From here I (un)greet my professor, who started the lecture with the words: “Good morning, future engineers and you women.”

From the University of Rzeszów, during my defense (not mine), I heard: “I wish you gentlemen successful careers and the ladies successful families.”

Greetings to those employers who told me that they were looking for specialists, not secretaries (it was supposed to be a joke).

I still remember the words of my friend’s lecturer from the polybuda: “You should be cooking your husband a cutlet now, with one child holding crayons and the other in a stroller, and not making an appointment for a make-up session.” The girls must have heard a lot of this…
