He has proven more than once that he does not stick to reality too tightly. His fantasy and virtually endless amount of money have brought him to the point where he can say whatever he wants, however nonsense it may be. He is also the owner of Twitter (renamed X), where true “freedom of speech” is supposed to prevail.
When “freedom of speech” turned into a slur against every minority, Elon Musk was reluctant to react. X tolerates racism, violence and homophobia, which has led it to gradually lose additional advertisers. IBM, Disney, Sony Pictures, Universal and several dozen other companies turned away from X after Musk “reposted” quite seriously anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. The money stopped flowing rapidly, so the multimillionaire decided to act. He went on a trip to Poland, to Auschwitz, where he made several propaganda gestures aimed at showing how positive he was towards Israel. He also stated that if social media had been active during World War II, the nightmare of the Holocaust would never have happened. We know what led him to this conclusion.
Elon Musk saw this presentation and already knew: if Twitter existed, the Holocaust would not have happened
As part of his trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Elon Musk also watched a presentation based on what social media posts would likely look like if they were created during the war. There were also very modern abbreviations “IDK” (I don’t know) and “OH. MY. GOD” next to a photo of a burning synagogue with the faithful. Everything is dipped in Twitter sauce, written from accounts that could belong to people of that time, including those known to us from history – Mordechai Anielewicz (the leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising) and others, generated for the needs of the presentation.
Elon Musk saw how brilliantly Twitter community suggestions could work, already verifying some of the entries that distort reality. The uniting power of social media was shown, in which the virtual Mordechai Anielewicz called for an uprising, and the power of argumentative discussion – the virtual Nazi announced the elimination of “Jewish terrorists” was countered with a photo of the real little Artur SiemiÄ…tek, the famous “boy from the ghetto”. But since the discussion is not always enriched with arguments, people who doubt the situation in concentration camps are also shown, explaining that “how do we know that it is true, since the letters from friends from Treblinka do not mention anything about it.”
If only X had existed in 1939, how many lives could have been saved?
– the creator of the presentation asks rhetorically at the end. Detailed frames with subsequent slides can be found in our gallery at the top of the page.
The presentation was shown at a conference organized by EJA – the European Jewish Association at its annual conference, which took place last Monday in Krakow. Elon Musk was a guest at the meeting and after this presentation he came to the conclusion that the genocide organized by the Nazis could not have happened if social media existed in the world. The Auschwitz Museum distanced itself from the content of the presentation, which was announced in response to a question from a journalist of the website.
Social media – they exist. Ethnic cleansing is doing great
Moved by fresh images from Auschwitz, Elon Musk probably did not want to be reminded of the fact that social media exists today and ethnic cleansing is still taking place. Regardless of the functioning of X, China consistently keeps several million Uyghurs in concentration camps. “Filter camps” exist in Russia, Cuba, North Korea. Israel’s actions against Palestine also bear the hallmarks of partial ethnic cleansing by taking land from Palestinians for settlement by Israeli settlers. Russia kidnaps Ukrainian children and denationalizes them, forbidding them to speak Ukrainian and giving them new, Russian identities. As you can see, social media does not interfere with these practices.
