“Robot Dreams”, by Pablo Berger from Bilbao, nominated for an Oscar

“Robot Dreams”, an animated film by Bilbao director Pablo Berger, will compete for the Oscar for best animated film at the 94th edition of the Hollywood Academy Awards, which will be held on March 10 in Los Angeles. (early morning on March 11 in Euskal Herria).
Based on the popular graphic novel by Sara Varon. Dog is a lonely dog who lives in Manhattan. One day he decides to build himself a robot, to be his friend. Their friendship grows, until they become inseparable, to the rhythm of New York in the 80s. One summer night, Dog, with great sadness, is forced to abandon the robot on the beach.
“Robot Dreams” premiered at Cannes in May 2023, and then screened at the Sitges film festival. It hit theaters on December 6. It has won awards at the European Film Awards, Forqué and Annecy awards, among others, and is nominated for four Goya awards.

The rivals of the Bilbao director’s film at the Oscars will be “Spider-Man: Crossing the Multiverse”, “Nimona”, “The Heron Boy” and “Elemental”.
Actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid, accompanied by the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Janet Yang, were in charge of announcing the nominations for the most precious awards in the film industry.
“The Snow Society”
“The Snow Society” by Catalan Juan Antonio Bayona is also among the films nominated for the Oscars. The film about the tragedy of the Andes is up for two awards, best international film and best makeup and hairdressing.
It is the first nomination for the director of “The Orphanage”, “The Impossible” or “Jurassic World”, who this year was already a candidate for the Golden Globes in the same category, although he finally won the award.
Bayona’s film has not achieved the other two nominations for which it was up for: best soundtrack and best special effects.
