Timeless themes, authentic characters and a star cast – all this has made it a cult series today. The production debuted on small screens in 2006. For over a decade, it broke all possible records and became a TVP hit. When the last episode was broadcast at the end of November 2016, many expected a decline in viewership. None of these things. The inhabitants of Wilkowyj constantly create a sensation among viewers and delight subsequent generations.
“Ranczo” is still a phenomenon. 13 million hours on Netflix is just one of the successes
The same team of producers worked on “Rancz” almost from the very beginning. There were as many as 10 seasons. Each episode enjoyed spectacular viewership, which soon made the series an undisputed record holder in the history of domestic television. On the wave of popularity, the feature film “Ranczo Wilkowyje” was also made, which was no less successful than the original. The phenomenon is also evidenced by the fact that the streaming giant is interested in the series comedy. The production joined the library, because this is what we are talking about, in 2022 and quickly won the hearts of its subscribers. It is therefore not surprising that after the license expired, the website decided to renew it for another two years in order to continue to profit from its continuing popularity.
The creators of “Rancz” will lose almost half a million zlotys. All because of outdated law
There is a common belief that high viewership translates into equally high profits for creators. In this case, however, it is not so obvious. Although the success of the series is unquestionable, its producers do not receive any remuneration for it. It turns out that Polish law does not provide for royalties for content published on the Internet. – Even a viewership of 13 million hours is not enough for the creators of the series “Ranczo” to receive at least one zloty of royalties due from Netflix, a company whose revenues in 2022 exceeded USD 31.6 billion – bartosz Paciorek, manager of Licensing and Contract Implementation Department of the Polish Filmmakers Association ZAPA.
The blame for this should be placed not on the US, but on officials who are not particularly eager to introduce the act on amending copyright law recognized by the European Union. – If Poland, like all other European Union countries, decided to implement the directive on copyright and related rights in the digital single market, the creators of “Rancz” could count on receiving royalties of close to half a million PLN. And this is only for the first half of 2023 – emphasized the SFP representative. However, there is a good chance that this issue will change as expected in the near future, which was even called for by the Prime Minister himself, who promised to deal with the matter.
