The film is still very popular and has a lot of devoted fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, audiences rated the production 71 percent on the freshness scale, and critics rated it as much as 82 percent. Despite this, the painting raises a lot of controversy. Many viewers today are struck primarily by the role of Robert Downey Junior, who played a black man wearing blackface. In addition, the film showed people with disabilities in a rather mocking way.

Robert Downey Jr. Since the premiere of the film, he has been defending the character of Kirk Lazarus, who darkens his skin for the production to play a man of a different race. In the latest edition of the “Literally! With Rob Lowe” podcast, the actor returned to the topic once again. Downey Jr. he referred in an interview to the sitcom “All in the Family” from the 1970s, which also touched upon controversial topics. The production was groundbreaking in terms of its approach to racism, social justice and sexism, but not everyone understands this convention.

“There used to be an understanding with the viewers”

“There was a warning before the episodes. People should check carefully what it is, because today everything seems to offend them, and this is a good antidote,” said the actor. The star recalled that in the warning, the creators noted that what was seen on the screen, taken out of context, could be considered bad, but the production, while showing certain behaviors, also denied them.

The actor noted that “Eggs in the Tropics” also wanted to point out the filmmakers’ wrong choices through humor. “Ben Stiller directed, cast and shot ‘Tropical Eggs’ in the spirit of opposition to everything that is inappropriate and that has been embedded in the consciousness for so long,” notes Downey Jr. At the same time, he regrets that so many people read the film completely differently than he thinks they should.

“There used to be an understanding with the audience, I’m not saying that today the audience doesn’t understand anything, but things have become very complicated,” explains the actor.

Despite the controversy, “Eggs in the Tropics” achieved great commercial success. With a budget of $92 million, the film grossed more than twice that amount. In turn, Robert Downey Jr. he was nominated for an Oscar for his role.
