The search for these paintings lasted 14 years. The thief hid them in the basement. Now they’re worth a fortune

Almost 14 years ago, paintings by Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso were stolen from the villa of an art collector in Tel Aviv. Eventually, the police tracked down the thief, but the whereabouts of the works remained a mystery. Now the case has finally come to an end.

In February 2010, an art collector’s villa in Tel Aviv was burglarized, as a result of which many valuable items disappeared, including: luxury jewelry with a total value of PLN 680,000 dollars. However, the greatest loss turned out to be two famous paintings. We are talking about “Head” and “Praying Man” by Marc Chagall, which were valued at PLN 900,000 at that time. dollars, which when converted into Polish zloty gives approximately PLN 3.6 million.

The police had been unsuccessfully trying to find the perpetrator of the theft for several years, but only at the end of 2022 there was a breakthrough in the case and he was found. Belgian investigators then learned that a luxury watch dealer from Namur in Wallonia was trying to cash in on both paintings. The operation was resumed, which involved many months of monitoring the activities of a 68-year-old man, which ultimately resulted in a search of his property. Although he admitted under pressure that he was in possession of them, he did not intend to reveal where they were hidden, and ultimately the investigation came to a standstill.

However, the investigators in charge of the case did not give up. After another search lasting several weeks, the police decided to also investigate the places where the dealer had previously lived. So they went to the north of Belgium, to Antwerp, where, according to their knowledge, one of his apartments was located. This time everything went more smoothly and the case was ultimately successful.

Small boxes were found in the basement of the thief’s house. Although they looked inconspicuous, their contents amazed everyone. It was here that the missing Picassos and Chagalls were located. After a preliminary inspection, the police informed the public that they did not show any signs of damage and were still framed in their original frames.
