The subject of the auction is a poster of the film “Chłopi” with the autograph of DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman, the duo responsible for, among others, for the script and direction of this production.
DK Welchman is a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Together with her husband Hugh Welchman, they are also the authors of the Oscar-nominated “Loving Vincent”. She was also nominated for “Polityka’s” Passports for “Chłopów”.
“Chłopi” is an adaptation of the novel by Władysław Reymont, made using the method of painting animation. – The drama that takes place in “Chłopy” is, on the one hand, a unique record of a fragment of our history – the action takes place at the end of the 19th century – and, on the other hand, a microcosm of what is happening in our lives and around us: conflict between generations; the need for individualism from people around us; discrimination; anger and fear of what is imposed on us by forces above us and beyond our control. Fear that we can lose what we work hard for at any moment. The desire to express ourselves. The need to find love and beauty in often brutal world. These are still vivid topics today, says DK Welchman and adds:
The novel’s 900 pages contain a story that is vibrant, relevant and terrifying. This world is about us: about our quarrels, jealousies, loves and our tragedies. “Peasants” is a magnifying glass revealing what we really are. If we look at the “Peasants” from above, thinking that we have gone further, achieved more, become more sophisticated, it will turn out that we have not really changed at all. Their story is our story.
Hugh Welchman is a graduate of the University of Oxford and the British National Film and Television School. He produced 16 short films and two feature-length films for the BreakThru Films studio, winning over 60 awards at international festivals, including an Oscar for best short animation. In 2008, for the film “Peter and the Wolf” and European? Film Award? for “Loving Vincent” in the best animated film category.
About the #OneDayDłużej campaign – we play for WOŚP
The Gazeta.pl campaign for WOŚP was born in 2019 and it was not a happy time. The 27th Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra was the first in which there was no smile and pride in helping children or the elderly until late at night. The celebration of goodness, one of the greatest social events in Poland after 1989, was interrupted by the tragic events in Gdańsk. The mayor of the city, Paweł Adamowicz, was mortally wounded on the WOŚP stage.
Then we decided: let’s finish the finale next Sunday, let’s defeat evil together. This idea is still valid, although for several years we have been finishing not a week, but the next day after the WOŚP finale.
The goal of the 32nd Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity is “Lungs after the pandemic. We play for children and adults!”. The money collected as part of the #OneDayOver auction will go to the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. We also invite you to watch live on January 29 in the evening, during which we will end our auctions. We hope that there will be plenty of emotions and people willing to support the campaign. See you! And you can find all our auctions.
