RELATED NOTES
Today, after 52 years, Margaret II will end her reign – she is the longest-serving living monarch on the throne – and abdicate in favor of Crown Prince Frederik, her eldest son.
The Nordic country has been a hereditary monarchy since 1660, and the last abdication dates back to 1146, after the abdication of Erik III. to go to the monastery.
Although Queen Margaret II has repeatedly mentioned that her role will be a job “for the rest of her life”, she has insisted that it is already necessary to make room for a new generation, as part of the justification for her retirement.
coronation day
The date coincides with January 14, 1972, when the heir to the throne was proclaimed queen from the balcony of Christiansborg Castle, after the death of her father, Frederik IX. This decision became possible after abolition of the Salic law (medieval regulations that determined that women could not inherit the throne)19 years earlier.
Ceremony without foreign guests
The day should start at 14:00 with the Council of State, where Margareta II will sign her declaration of abdication.
The announcement will start at 3:00 p.m. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will give an opening speech, followed by a short speech from Frederick X. Three volleys of 27 rounds each will be fired from the military fortress as part of the celebration.
Frederik and the new Queen Maria, after the succession, will host a small reception at which, among others, Frederiksen and the presidents of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, Danish autonomous territories, will be present.
There will be no guests from royal houses from other countries at the events, nor will there be a coronation, the Royal House reported. Frederick, his younger brother, Prince Joachim, will be present, without his wife and children, who like him live in Washington; and Maria, his older sister.
Carriage tour
Federico and Mary will first leave Amalienborg for Christiansborg in a car, while Margaret II will do so two minutes later from the second palace of the complex in a carriage; On the way back, the new kings will go in a carriage, and the queen in a car.
The program of events also includes a reception at the Danish Parliament on Monday and a religious service on January 21 at the cathedral in Aarhus, the country’s second city.
