A brawl on the bike path. “Get this kid out of here”

Conflicts between users of bicycle paths are commonplace. Most of them result from the belief that some users of a path think they have more rights to it than others.

The increasingly dense network of bicycle paths in Poland means that more and more people decide to use a bicycle as an everyday means of transport. They do it for various reasons: economic, health, logistical. However, cyclists are not the only users of bicycle paths. They are also used by people on scooters (mainly electric), roller skates, and various types of gyroscopic vehicles. Inevitably, there are often misunderstandings between them.

“Get that kid out of here.”

One of the readers wrote to the editors of nazwa.gazeta.pl, describing a situation she recently witnessed on her way to the store. Mrs. Anna (name for editorial information) She was waiting for the green light at the pedestrian crossing. Not far from her, a several-year-old child was riding on a bicycle path, and her mother in running clothes was running next to her. “Suddenly, a cyclist stopped next to them very quickly and with great force. He was dressed in professional clothes, so I assume he was just doing his training. He shouted to the woman: ‘Get this kid out of here!’ and drove away,” recalls Mrs. Anna.

“The man was angry and aggressive. The child’s mother was scared, the child himself was confused because he didn’t know what was happening,” wrote Mrs. Anna. “Me too. Only later did I understand that small children should not use the bicycle path, but ride on the sidewalk. It does not change the fact that this man behaved outrageously. This is not the first time I have witnessed cyclists who treat the bicycle path like your own training track,” she added. “Where’s the culture? Understanding? Politeness,” she asked. “Due to the time of year, there was no one else on the path, and the mother was running right next to the child, so she was watching over his safety,” she added.

The regulations specify all this

In accordance with applicable regulations (Act of June 20, 1997 – Road Traffic Law), children who are less than ten years old and riding a bicycle cannot ride on the bicycle path, even with a guardian. They should ride on the sidewalk.
