It would seem that today children have much more freedom than before. He is spreading texts about “stress-free upbringing” left and right. At the same time, we pay much more attention to safety. Because there are more threats – or at least they are more publicized. The number of cars that may pose a threat to our children has changed, as well as the availability of information, which has influenced our awareness and vigilance. What did it look like a few decades ago, when we were children ourselves? We asked several people about it.
“It never occurred to anyone that I could leave the playground”
Ice skating on a frozen pond or hanging around the neighborhood without special supervision. This seems incredibly dangerous, and my brother and I used to do it all the time, without much thought. And no one was worried – neither us nor our parents. If I think that my child would do this, I want to wrap him in bubble wrap or, preferably, chain him to the radiator.
– said Justyna. Agnieszka also has memories of what happened around the block. Parents often let their children go to the playground and thought they would stay there until lunch. Often the truth was slightly different.
After many years, my grandmother found out that my favorite pastime was going with my friends to the meadow less than a kilometer from the block. We chased cows there and waded in a small river – no one thought that I would leave the playground next to the block.
– Playing in a square full of old reinforcements, concrete ruins and metal sheets was the norm, it was sad to go home – added Aga. – We had lots of fun there, there was never an adult with us. I would never allow any of my daughters to enter such a place.
It was no safer in the countryside. Or maybe just the opposite. The aforementioned ice skating on a pond that wasn’t necessarily completely frozen, returning home after dark or wandering around various corners in the company of animals and agricultural machines sounds like hell today, not only for new parents.
– Jumping on loose hay in a barn in the countryside! – said Martyna. – Nobody took into account that you could fall into a hole and never get out. Fortunately, everyone is alive.
Even adults were unaware of the risks
Both Agnieszka and our next interlocutor, Monika, also recall situations that could have had truly disastrous consequences. Fortunately, nothing bad happened in any of these cases, but they draw attention to the fact that it is worth sensitizing not only children, but also adults, to certain issues.
I got into a completely strange car, with complete strangers who asked me if I knew how to get to the circus – they were from another town. Of course I knew. I got in and only when I proudly told half of my family how helpful I was, did they start to make me aware of the danger. I was 8 years old at most.
– Walking with keys around your neck. I didn’t do this, but it was a common sight. Even later, at school, they started showing us educational films on this subject.
What was it like for you? Have you also been wandering around and coming across dangers? Or maybe on the contrary – you constantly encountered prohibitions and orders? Share your stories in the comments. We are very curious!
