“Poor Creatures” is one of the most anticipated films of 2024. The film by Yórgos Lánthimos will soon be released in Polish cinemas. The premiere is scheduled for Friday, January 19. A few days earlier, viewers in the UK will be able to watch it. However, they will not see one of the scenes because the British Board of Film Classification decided to censor it.
Which scene in Poor Things won’t be seen by UK audiences?
The organization responsible for the classification and censorship of films and games in Great Britain found problematic the part of the film in which two boys observe the main character working as a prostitute. The production will be officially distributed only after the changes are introduced. However, this does not change the fact that Yórgos Lánthimos’ film will only be available to viewers over 18 years of age.
“Poor Things” received seven Golden Globe nominations. Ultimately, the film won in the “Best Comedy or Musical” category. Emma Stone, in turn, received the statuette for “Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical”. Previously, “Poor Creatures” also received the Golden Lion at the Venice Festival.
Before the screening, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos referred to erotic scenes with the main character: “Sex is an integral part of the story itself because it shows freedom… It was very important for me not to make a film that would be prudish, because it would mean a complete betrayal towards the main character… We had to make sure that Emma was not ashamed of her body, nudity and being involved in these scenes, and she understood that immediately.
