Bot, bitcoin and transgender, the new words in the RAE dictionary

The new edition of the dictionary has 3,836 modifications.

This update of the tool consulted by millions of Spanish speakers included a good number of words related to social networks and new technologies, such as bitcoin, cyberbullying, cybercrime, webinar or stick cutter.

The pandemic, which dominated the update of late last year when covid, coronavirus and dystopian were added, continues to be present, which implied that words such as mask or nasobuco were taken into account, synonymous with mask in several Latin American countries, or swab, as the swab test is called.

“Terms related to sexuality and gender, such as polyamory, transgender, cisgender or pansexuality, were also incorporated,” the statement explained.

As is customary, articles with words that have to do with gastronomy were included, such as quinoa, crudité or cachopo, a typical dish of the gastronomy of Asturias (northwestern Spain). (I)
