Wanda Koczeska was born in 1937 in Warsaw. In 1959, she graduated from the acting department of the State Drama School in Warsaw. A year earlier, she made her screen debut with the role of Agnieszka in “Rancho Texas” by Wadim Berestowski, a somewhat breakneck attempt to transfer classic Hollywood westerns to Polish reality. Already in her first role, she had to face a brave scene in which she appeared without a swimsuit. Two years later, as Mirka, she appeared in Andrzej Wajda’s cult “Innocent Sorcerers” alongside Tadeusz Łomnicki, Kalina Jędrusik and Zbigniew Cybulski. And yet it was she, the blue-eyed blonde, who stole all the scenes in which she appeared on the screen.

She performed on the stages of the Ateneum Theater, Kwadrat, National Theater and Na Woli. She became involved with journalist Maciej Znaniecki, and in 1969, after the birth of her son, Michał, she interrupted her career for over three years. She explained that she had to take care of his upbringing. In the 1970s, she focused on her stage career and rarely appeared on screens.

When Michał Znaniecki was 18, he decided to move to Italy. Some time earlier, he was offered a job at Telewizja Polska. – My father was a television journalist, he was on television 24 hours a day. I was afraid of a similar life – he admitted in an interview. – I wanted to be myself, not someone else’s son – he added. He completed his studies in Italy and started his career there. Wanda Koczeska often performed in her son’s performances in Italy and also in Ireland. – I remember how during the rehearsal of “En Attendant Chopin” in Dublin she recited “Out of My Sight” and we all started crying. She spoke Polish, so only I understood the text, but all the actresses, Italian, French and English, were crying – said Michał Znaniecki. He also admitted that Wanda Koczeska had probably never canceled a performance in her entire career on stage, and she played as many as 250 of them a year.

In 2012, Michał Znaniecki got married to his partner, Jon Paul Laka. The father, who died in 2002, never found out about his son’s orientation. The mother, in turn, heard about it second-hand. – Not from me. Without my knowledge, people I considered friends told her, revealed Znaniecki. Although it took several years, eventually, as the director admitted, she accepted that her son was homosexual. Wanda Koczeska died on December 15, 2008 in a car accident. Her car skidded and she died on the spot. She was 71 years old. Her last role was in the series “Determinator” in 2007.
