One Indian woman may go down in history as one of the oldest women to ever give birth. She is currently the second oldest mother in the world. Daljinder Kaur, whose age is estimated at 78, gave birth to a son on April 19, 2016 named Arman, which means “wish” in Hindi. The baby was the first child for Kaur and her then 79-year-old husband, Mohinder Singh Gill, after almost 46 years of marriage.

In a society that places great importance on marriage and children, they were an extraordinary couple. Many Indian women are abandoned by their husbands if their relationship remains childless. But the woman’s husband, Mohinder Singh Gill, 79, was devoted to her and never blamed her.

Adoption was out of the question for fear of what the life of a child with different genetic material might be like. They finally decided to undergo in vitro treatment in a clinic in Haryana state in 2007. Ms Gill claims that Dr Anurag Bishnoi, the owner of the clinic, repeatedly tried to discourage her, saying her body was too old and that the stress would be too much, but she persisted. Two previous attempts ended in failure. Even then, they did not lose hope.

Mrs Kaur said: “Since the baby has been crawling, I have been moving on my legs and knees and it is hard for me. My body can’t cope with it. It was harder than I thought. My blood pressure has dropped and I get tired very easily. I have been to several doctors, but they gave me just medications and a diet plan. The woman has circulation problems due to late pregnancy, and her bone health has also deterioratedbut says he doesn’t regret his decision.
