A washing machine is one of the most necessary appliances in the home. We wash not only bed linen, towels and stuffed animals in it. If you want your device to serve its purpose as long as possible, you need to take care of it. This means not only regular cleaning, but also not putting things inside that shouldn’t be there.
What not to put in the washing machine? Many people make a mistake
Scott Flint has been repairing home appliances for over 30 years. In an interview with the portal, he revealed that mats and bathroom rugs should not be thrown into the washing machine. “Bathroom mats absorb so much water that they weigh much more than the designed weight for a washing machine,” he said.
Modern washing machines can operate at a speed of 1,200 revolutions per minute. If the carpets are wet, the device may not be able to withstand the weight and may break down. Silicone/rubber elements intended to minimize slipping are also damaged.

Can you wash the rug in a washing machine? Your wallet may hurt later
Bathroom mats often have a rubber backing. During washing, it falls apart and clogs the drain pump motor and the drain pipe. The cost of repair is on average $240, or approximately PLN 960. Even if the rug doesn’t have rubber underneath, its long fibers can also break off in the process and clog the drain. Then it is a short way to destroy the bearing, and its repair can cost up to $500 (approx. PLN 1,998). If you don’t want to have to buy a new washing machine every 2-3 years, Scott advised taking your rugs to the laundry room. He also emphasized that washing blankets, sleeping bags and dog beds will cause similar damage.
