“Hala Odlotów” returned to TVP. Presenter in a moving speech. “I hope we’re past this.”

“Departures Hall” disappeared from the air almost 8 years ago, after 4 years of broadcast. Now the talk show devoted to culture and art has returned in a special episode. The host, Katarzyna Janowska, first surprised the audience with a speech in which, among other things, she mentioned censorship on TVP. She invited, among others, to the program: Agnieszka Holland and Andrzej Seweryn.

“Hala Odlotów” debuted on TVP Kultura in 2012. The last episode of this rather unusual talk show was broadcast on January 14, 2016. Soon, its host and head of the station left TVP. – Throughout all the years of work on the program, no one interfered in the selection of topics or invited guests. Apparently this is something unique on TV. I can’t imagine that I would have to consult the content of the program with anyone now, and I suspect that this would be the case – she explained in 2016 in an interview with Katarzyna Janowska.

“Departure hall” reactivated. The TVP Kultura program returned after 8 years

“Hala Odlotów” returned to the air in a special edition. The special episode was broadcast on January 1, 2024 on TVP1. The program featured people whom viewers had no chance to see or hear on Polish Television over the last 8 years, and certainly not in a positive or neutral context. Agnieszka Holland and Andrzej Seweryn, who have not been welcome on Polish Television since 2016, appeared in the “Departures Hall”. The talk show also featured Matylda Damięcka, Maciek Hamela, the director of “From Where to Where”, who is fighting for Oscar supremacy, as well as Agnieszka Przegalińska, Maja Kleczewska and Daniel Rycharski. Although the list of invited guests may be surprising in the context of what has happened so far, the speech of the program host, Katarzyna Janowska, was equally surprising.

Agnieszka Holland and Andrzej Seweryn on TVP. “They haven’t been here in recent years.”

The special edition of “Departures Hall” began with a speech by the host. – Eight years ago, I co-hosted the last edition of the “Hala Odlotów” program. A program dedicated to culture, which was broadcast on TVP Kultura. Then I left the public media because culture became a tool of political and ideological struggle, Janowska began. In further words, she mentioned censorship, which resulted in films such as “Ida” by Paweł Pawlikowski being placed on the shelf with inconvenient productions.

– Artists who opposed or simply supported free culture were blacklisted in public media or refused to appear in public media themselves, she added. She also mentioned that Olga Tokarczuk’s Nobel speech was not broadcast on public television. – I hope that this is behind us, that today we are opening a new chapter in culture and public media. Today I am convinced that the media does not belong to politicians. The media belong to citizens. That’s why I invited artists and cultural managers today. Most of them have not been here in recent years, she added.
