Kings Charles and Camilla ‘have a very high bar’: The future of the British monarchy in 2024

The Queen has announced that her son, Prince Frederik, will take over her throne. “On January 14, 2024, 52 years after succeeding my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark. I will leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.he said in a televised message.

The popular 83-year-old monarch, a widow since 2018, underwent back surgery in February that kept her out of public life until April. This intervention would make her reconsider her position in the royal family.

“The operation (…) stimulated thoughts about the future, about the question of whether the time has come to transfer responsibility to the next generation,” said the queen.

Since the death of her further cousin, Elizabeth II of England, Margaret II is the last reigning monarch in Europe.

More than 80% of Danes say they support the monarchy, and crowds celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.

“Many of us have never met another monarch. Queen Margaret is the true embodiment of Denmark and over the years she has woven words and feelings into who we are as people and as a nation.“, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded in a statement. (AND)
