Before “Shrek” became the favorite of millions of children and adults, the producers of the crazy story about an ogre living in the swamps thought about what the main character should look like. A test recording from 1995 has recently been released online, in which we can see the prototype of the ogre we know from the screens. It is also worth mentioning that the animation creators are currently working on the fifth part of Shrek’s adventures. It is scheduled to hit screens in 2024, although the exact release date is not yet known.
What was Shrek supposed to look like? You won’t be thrilled
Watching the 1995 recording, we can note that the producers of the animated hit really took the characterization of the mythical ogre to heart. Shrek presented in the test material does not resemble the well-known hero at all. The animator responsible for his appearance, Barry Jackson, stated at the very beginning that the ogre should be green to resemble the character from William Steig’s novel as closely as possible.
However, the prototype of the main character had a pointy head, missing teeth and a gigantic belly. After seeing the footage, the producers immediately decided that Shrek’s appearance should be changed. “She looked terrible, didn’t do the job, wasn’t funny and I didn’t like her,” said producer Jeffrey Katzenberg. So the animators continued working on the next version of Shrek, until the character we knew from the screen became a character.
