Liquidation of TVP. What about series and cult productions? The lawyer explains, the National Broadcasting Council threatens

The topic that has been on Poles’ minds for several days now is the liquidation of TVP. What does this mean for many productions? There were reports in some media that the television archives would disappear forever. The lawyer explains and calms down, but the National Broadcasting Council warns.

Minister of Culture Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz decided to put TVP, Polskie Radio and PAP into liquidation. He made the decision after President Andrzej Duda vetoed the budget-related bill and thus suspended the financing of public media. This was to “secure the continued operation of these companies” and carry out the necessary restructuring. The application is still awaiting approval. The legal turmoil and chaos that has been going on around Telewizja Polska for several days now make many viewers worry about the future of their favorite series and programs. Lawyers, however, reassure us.

Liquidation of TVP. What does this mean for series, films and programs?

After the information about going into liquidation, voices began to appear that not only new productions and programs would disappear from the air, but also cult series produced years ago by Telewizja Polska. Will the collapse of TVP really mean that viewers will also lose access to the archives? As explained by prof. Katarzyna Bilewska, attorney and partner at BLSK Legal, has no grounds for such concerns, and films, series and programs “will not be annihilated.” – The liquidator secures them and may appoint other entities that will administer them, for example subsidiaries. He can also sell them, but considering that these archives are very important from the point of view of Polish culture, I assume that the liquidator will make a decision that will enable the materials contained therein to be further made available to the public – he emphasizes and adds that “liquidation does not mean the annihilation of the archives “.

Importantly, putting Telewizja Polska into liquidation does not mean that it will stop broadcasting programs. This also does not mean that journalists and employees will cease further activities. Viewers can therefore rest assured about the future of archives, cult productions, and current programs.

The president of TVP reassures. The National Broadcasting Council warns against “limiting access to cultural goods”

Tomasz Sygut, the newly elected president of TVP, also reassures viewers and TVP employees. In a special announcement, he announced that further programs would be gradually restored. “Teleexpress” and “Panorama” will return to the air, and the TVP Info signal will also be restored. – However, I must be sure that the content presented will meet the standards of public television – .

In turn, the National Broadcasting Council, with the votes of the majority of its members, expressed “strong opposition” to the minister’s actions.

The decision to liquidate public media affects the entire system of democratic values in the country, depriving public media of the ability to fulfill their public mission, and thus limits society’s access to information and cultural goods.
