in 1971 he appeared in Kazimierz Kutz’s film “Pearl in the Crown”, the second part of the so-called Silesian triptych. The film was released in cinemas in 1972. A year later, Andrzej Wajda’s “Wesele” with the role of the Groom debuted on the screens. Kutz and the cast went to Naples, where he was to promote the cinema of the Polish People’s Republic at a film festival. However, the Polish delegation also included Wajda and the “Wesela” crew.
Englert competed with Olbrychski for the affections of the Italian actress. He told all about it in the book
After arriving in Italy, the Polish delegation was under the care of an Italian actress. Maria Rosaria Omaggio was to make sure that Poles felt as good as possible in Naples, and she was also to lead a press conference during which Polish artists were introduced. The beautiful Italian woman caught the eye of many people, including Daniel Olbrychski. For some reason, Kazimierz Kutz, dissatisfied that Andrzej Wajda also came to Italy with him, decided to start an unusual competition. He wanted “his” actor to seduce Omaggio. So he started blackmailing Jan Englert. The actor revealed the details in a conversation with Kamila Drecka.
– What a girl! Do you know what she looks like, man? Daniel has been doing push-ups in front of her since yesterday. She’s supposed to be yours! – It means? – You have to seduce her, otherwise you will never play for me again! – But I’m naked, with no money! I won’t even invite her for coffee! – I’ll take it upon myself!
– he reported in the book “Without Applause”. Kutz offered that if Englert asked the Italian woman on a date, he would pay for the dinner.
Kutz gave Englert an ultimatum. Did he carry out his threat?
But the problem was not only Englert’s finances, but also his poor knowledge of English. Kutz, however, remained adamant and began to threaten again that Englert would not play for him again. So he asked the Italian actress on a date and he did it in just 30 minutes, although, as he recalled, “his calves were shaking” and he felt like a thirteen-year-old again. Delighted, Kutz handed him a hundred-dollar bill, which was then equivalent to three months’ salary of a theater actor.
Although the conversation didn’t go well at first, and the dinner probably didn’t quite go according to Englert’s intentions, he persistently adored Maria until the end of his stay, much to Daniel Olbrychski’s dissatisfaction. The “Deluge” star tried to attract the actress’ attention, but to no avail. Afterwards, all three returned to Poland, but Englert, although it could have been a simple coincidence, did not play for Kutz again.
