Who among us wouldn’t like to win millions in the lottery? Unfortunately, winning big is not always associated with happiness and a carefree life. As it turns out, sometimes a sudden inflow of cash can do more harm than good.

As they say, money doesn’t buy happiness. This saying is confirmed by the stories of people who were brought down by a big win. One such person is Karl Crompton. In 1996, the man won £11 million in the British lottery, and later his wife left him and his health deteriorated. There are more similar stories.

Lara and Roger Griffiths won £1.8 million and spent the money on expensive travel, plastic surgery and luxury cars, but as luck would have it, their house caught fire in 2010. Despite a fortune, the couple had so little insurance that they had to cover the costs of rebuilding their house and renovations from savings. Three years later, the couple divorced and both returned to “normal” full-time jobs. Margaret Loughrey won €32 million. Before she became a millionaire, she lived in a modest apartment, but when she became rich, she felt pressure from her family. So she gave each member a million and broke off contact. She was left alone and had many problems in her life – she was accused of assault and defamation.

Similar stories can be found in Poland. A resident of the village of Wydminy, located in the Giżycko poviat, won PLN 13 million in 2010. The overjoyed man boasted to his neighbors and was later forced to move out of his home to a town 120 kilometers away. However, the real tragedy happened later, when he bought an expensive BMW for his son. The boy had a stroke that left the passenger paralyzed and will never walk again. The perpetrator was sent to prison for 3.5 years.
