Although Emil Karewicz was the undisputed star of Polish cinema, it was not his career but his family that was his priority. After two failed marriages, fate finally smiled on him. He spent over six decades with his third wife. Get to know their unique love story.

He played Hermann Brunner and a Gestapo officer in the cult film “How I Started World War II”. Emil Karewicz became a legend of Polish cinema while still alive, but his career was never more important to him than his family. However, before he found happiness and true love, he got married twice.

After their first meeting, he found out she was pregnant. After a few weeks they got married

In 1941, Karewicz wanted to avoid being transported to forced labor in Germany, so he took a job in a transport company. It was there that he met Ewa, who became his first wife. He was only 18 years old at the time.

So we went from talking, joking, and being together to getting married. (…) We had a modest wedding, in keeping with the times

– in the autobiography “Moje trio po trio”. The marriage, although initially happy, did not last. He went to the front, she was repatriated first to Gniezno and later to Gdańsk. They found each other after many years only to formalize the divorce.

Shortly later, during an evening of dancing during a pre-election campaign, a beautiful woman named Delfina caught his eye. “We fell in love instantly,” he said. After the first meeting, the woman told him that she was expecting a child. Karewicz felt an obligation to take care of her. So they got married quickly, and a few months later their daughter, Sylwia, was born. To provide for his family, the actor took a job in the library at the shipyard in Gdańsk. After several promotions and changes of positions, he joined the cast of the Kameralny Theater in Sopot. A year later, he and his team moved to Łódź, while his wife and daughter remained in Tricity. was going through a crisis at the time, and although the woman eventually joined him, they were unable to communicate. They divorced but remained friends.

They became close to each other by complete accident. They were married for over six decades

Before the actor could formalize the divorce, a new love appeared in his life. It was Teresa, an accounting employee of the Łódź theater. Although they knew each other before, they only became closer during the May Day parade. – I thought she was about to faint, so I wanted to hold her. Since then, we have walked through life together, still holding hands – this situation. After just a few weeks of intense acquaintance, he asked if she would become his wife. She agreed without hesitation, and in 1950 they got married. Shortly afterwards, their family expanded by two children, Krzysztof and Małgorzata.

We were a very good couple, understanding each other and knowing each other’s needs

– he wrote in his autobiography. Karewicz focused on acting, played on stage and appeared on the screen, while his wife took care of the house and raised the children. From the beginning, they had the same goal and had clearly defined responsibilities. They lived together for 62 years. The happiness was interrupted by the death of Teresa Karewicz on April 29, 2012. Emil Karewicz died less than 8 years later, on March 18, 2020.
