Stanisława Ryster came to TVP in 1975 by accident, at the suggestion of her relatives. After defending her diploma, she abandoned her plans to become a lawyer and won a television casting, because the television management was looking for a partner for Czesław Nowicki (the popular Wicherek) to make a weather forecast. It quickly turned out that its place was in a completely different format. Game show viewers are convinced of her professionalism, and she has a unique bond with one of them. “Wielka Gra” was the first game show in Poland produced under a foreign license, and it appeared on the air in 1962. Over the years, the hosts changed until Ryster appeared on it. She was its host continuously from 1975 to its end in 2006. Interestingly, at first the journalist was not at all delighted, but even terrified of taking over the program.
I knew what a nuisance a cyclical program was – there was no “have mercy”. I even found someone who would be willing to replace me, but the offer was impossible to refuse.
– Ryster mentioned years ago.
A two-man army. She was responsible for “Wielka Gra” together with the producer
Luckily for her and the fans of the game show, she decided to agree, which gave it cult status. She admitted years later that only she and producer Andrzej Madrjas were responsible for “The Great Game”. The professionalism of the program was so important to her that, in addition to running and substantive content, she was also responsible for, among others: for the selection of experts and the appearance of participants. The man had to show up in a jacket, while the woman was not allowed to appear with her belly uncovered, and she has not changed her mind to this day. Some time ago, in an interview with “Fakt”, she criticized the appearance of current TVP presenters while talking about the station’s anniversary.
This is now fashionable on state television. On every occasion, girls come out with their breasts exposed in evening dresses. I don’t think I’m suitable for this, because I have a different idea of elegance. I believe that every day, every time has its own requirements.
– She left no stone unturned on the hosts of last year’s “Big Test”.
A “cold” farewell to TVP. She learned about the end from the newspapers
Not only the beautiful Polish language used by Stanisława Ryster was memorable, but also her unforgettable pose during the broadcast of the game show. She would then put her left leg over her right one, and there were even rumors in the media that the team was helping her in this position, and that masseurs were eagerly taking care of her right after the program ended. However, the journalist put an end to these speculations years later, arguing that she was simply comfortable in such a pose.

She was awarded many times for her television work, and in 1998 she received the Super Wiktor award for a television personality for her lifetime achievement. The farewell to the game show took place 8 years later, and the host didn’t even know about the “Big Game” being taken off the air. She found out after the management’s decision. In the last episode, as always, she informed viewers that “We’ll meet in two weeks.” However, there was no next meeting.
The game show went off the air due to increasingly poorer viewership results, but due to the way Ryster was thanked for her long-term cooperation, she decided that she would never appear on TVP again. She first learned about the end from the press. Although in the following years there was a desire to resume broadcasting “The Great Game”, this stage was definitely closed for the presenter. Hot appeals from viewers and fans of the game show did not help.
Episodic return and joy of life. To this day, he points out journalists’ mistakes
Although after many years Ryster occasionally appeared on TVP, discovering the backstage of “The Great Game” on TVP Polonia in 2010, she decided not to make any more appearances. Interestingly, the producers of “Familiada” and “I Love You Polsko” were trying to get her back. Today, the 81-year-old journalist enjoys a quiet retirement and devotes her time to her beloved grandchildren, friends and working at home. Despite this, from time to time he shares observations about his former workplace and culture among today’s employees of Telewizja Publiczna.
I will only say in general that they use terrible Polish and I cannot listen to it. On all TV stations, the presenters make terrible language mistakes. We are such patriots and yet we have no respect for our own language? There are mistakes after mistakes, and even worse is the melody of the sentence. There are no affirmative sentences, each sentence ends with a question mark. You shouldn’t speak that way in Polish.
– Points to the lack of professionals in contemporary journalists.
