The novel of the writer Katixa Agirre (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1981) “Mothers don’t” (“The mothers no”, in its translation into Spanish) has come a long and fruitful road since it was published in 2018. It is the second novel in Agirre’s career after “Atertu arte itxaron” (2015, translated as ” The reluctant tourists “) and the short stories” Sua missing zaigu “(2007) and” Habitat “(2009).
The book, for example, can already be read in Spanish, Catalan, French, English and Dutch, and the filmmaker Mar Coll (Barcelona, 1981) is working on an adaptation for the cinema.
“Identified with the look on motherhood”
The project started two years ago, when Coll and his co-writer, Valentina Viso, received Agirre’s novel through a mutual friend. Coll has explained to us by phone that “at the time I had a one-year-old boy, and I felt very identified with the look on motherhood in the book.”
“My friend Valentina and I were looking at that moment for something that would motivate us to work, and we found it interesting to make an adaptation since all our previous work (the feature films” Tres dies amb la família “and” Tots volem el millor per a ella “, for example) is original,” he explains.
Coll and Viso are already working on a solid version of the script, which Katixa Agirre herself has read and which she has told us looks good. “I have full confidence in the director, since I have seen her previous works,” he added.
According to Coll, in 2022 they will work on financing the project, which they would like start shooting in 2023.
It is not yet clear in which language the film will be shot, as it depends on the production structure resulting from the funding search process.
