The new Netflix hit number one in Poland. They watch “Leave the World Behind” instead of Christmas movies
The apocalyptic drama of director and screenwriter Sam Esmail shows how quickly the reality we take for granted can collapse and how little it takes to trigger a catastrophe. The world of the film is scarier by the minute, the questions multiply and no one answers them.
“Leave the World Behind” was based on the novel by Rumaan Alam. A week after its premiere, the film was among the top 10 most watched productions of the platform in 92 countries. In Poland, it is in first place on the list. The production was rated by over 11,000 users on the Filmweb website, and the average rating was 6 on a ten-star scale.
Critics are slightly less favorable to the thriller. “At the beginning it looks quite interesting (although you can already feel the lack of quality), in the middle the tension weakens alarmingly, at the end it’s complete failure and no idea” – writes Tomasz Raczek. Kaja Klimek, in turn, commented on the technicalities that irritated her. “I like playing with the camera in Esmail’s series, but unfortunately here it’s just an exaggeration,” says the critic. Łukasz Muszyński, in turn, regrets that the film “repeats phrases in the tone of revealed truths, and artificially increases the tension with the help of obtrusive music and showy photos.”

Sam Esmail’s film could count on some more warm words from Łukasz Adamski from TVP Kultura. The journalist notes that “before 2019, I would have considered it too much calculated hysteria. However, the last 4 years have shown that this may be the end.” Domnik Sobolewski from Watching Closely admits that he has a weakness for “theatrical dramas”. “And even more to all post-apocalypse. In short, a good film for a Sunday afternoon,” the critic recommends.
In the Netflix ranking, “Leave the World Behind” beat the Christmas productions “Recipe for a Romantic Christmas” and “Christmas Like Usual.” In fourth place on the list was the animation “Leo”, and in fifth place was another Christmas proposal of the website – “Świąteczny pensionat”.
