“The midwife didn’t recommend it, but I listened to my mother-in-law.” The child spent her first Christmas Eve in the hospital

“I felt like crying when I thought about spending Christmas Eve and Christmas in the hospital. We should be sitting at the Christmas table, eating borscht with dumplings, inhaling the smell of the Christmas tree and listening to carols, and not the steady beeping of the equipment monitoring my baby’s breathing.”

Zuzia was supposed to be born around Christmas. When the woman felt contractions on December 14, she knew that they could appear before delivery, so she took her time making herself a cup of tea and sitting in an armchair with a book to rest. She had had a long and exhausting day. However, the contractions were getting stronger from moment to moment. The woman realized that that was it.

This Christmas was going to be much different than any other. The woman didn’t even realize how much

The holidays were very much awaited, it was the first time the couple had spent it with their daughter, the first time as a threesome. Despite problems with starting the engine, the woman made it to the hospital on time, and her daughter was born safe and sound. She received 10 points on the Apgar scale. The first days were accompanied by a lot of stress, emotions, anxiety and at the same time joy and excitement. Every day in the hospital her husband visited her, helped and participated in everything with the child. It was the same at home. When the community midwife visited them, she dispelled their doubts, answered questions and assured them that everything was fine. However, she had one important warning for them:

Please don’t receive any guests now. They will come to see the baby when it is a month old.

The doctor looked at the baby but didn’t have the best information. Verandaing in the cold didn’t end well

Zuzanna’s mother knew this was impossible. The whole family was waiting to finally see the youngest family member with their own eyes. After two days, the first guests arrived. Among them, the woman’s mother-in-law. She complained that the girl had not been outdoors yet and advised the woman to dress her, put her in a stroller and set her right next to the open window. Even though the woman had read about not doing it and the midwife also warned her, she listened to her mother-in-law. When the girl started coughing badly in the evening, the woman was terrified. The night was hard, and in the morning it was even worse. During the visit, the doctor said that he could not rule out pneumonia and recommended going to the hospital where the girl was born as soon as possible.

They put Zuzia in the incubator so that she could breathe better, and I was sitting next to her and couldn’t come to terms with it all. Just yesterday she was at home with me, everything was fine, and today I couldn’t hold her or breastfeed her because she was suffocating. They told me to express the milk with a breast pump and give it to Zuzia with a special bottle. I sat motionless next to her, still looking at her, afraid to let her out of my sight even for a moment. But when the nurse came with a tube to suck out the baby’s mucus, I had to leave! I couldn’t look at it.

Like a boomerang, the midwife’s words returned to the woman to refrain from receiving guests and good advice at the beginning. Now he knows he should have listened. The feeling of regret and guilt that she had failed in her first week as a mother continued to grow. Just after Christmas, the girl was released home. You could start all over again.
