He played jokes by former, fired editors on Trójka. Suddenly the director called him

Micha³ Margañski hosted a nightly program “AnagrammarganA” on the Third Program of Polish Radio. On December 13, he played archived statements by long-time radio journalists. He had only been broadcasting for half an hour when suddenly the management called him.

In a series of emotional posts on social media, Michał Margański announced that his Wednesday broadcast was suddenly interrupted by the management of Trójka. The journalist that day first announced that this broadcast would be different from the previous ones. On social media, he expressed hope that the change of government (“fully democratic”) would also be a moment of “rebuilding our radio.”

During the evening broadcast, which started at 11 p.m., he did not play music. He decided to show funny anecdotes and statements of former and long-term employees of Trójka – Niedźwiecki, Andrus, Mann, Olszański, Stelmach and others. There were slips of the tongue, slip-ups, loud snoring, mistakes, but also swear words and indecent jokes on air. However, the broadcast ended abruptly around 11:35 p.m.

Did the director of Trójka interrupt a program in which the statements of fired journalists were broadcast?

Margański says that around 11:35 p.m. the “director” called him (he does not specify who exactly he is referring to). He never returned to the air and did not continue his broadcast. He only had time to play electronic music in the background, which continued until the end of his program.

The director called me and said I couldn’t go on air anymore. I played electronic music because I couldn’t speak on air anymore. I decided about it myself, the producer listens to my instructions – says the journalist in an interview with Wirtualny Media.

A recording of the broadcast of the “AnagrammarganA” program is available online. It lasts 37 minutes and, indeed, the last anecdote broadcast on the air stops halfway through. The earlier ones are neither particularly political nor particularly iconoclastic (although they sometimes contain swear words and occasionally make more or less political jokes). The musical background from Ravel’s Bolero suddenly changes to trance electronic music.

Michał Margański immediately announced the sudden interruption of the broadcast on social media:

Unfortunately, I was taken off the air by the director. So this is my way of thanking you for this time – he wrote a minute before midnight.

In the next entry, he stated that he saw an analogy between the date of martial law and the removal of his program from the air:

On December 14, a protest in defense of the current “public media” is planned by the current management team of TVP and Polskie Radio and “journalists”. On December 13, 2023, I was pulled off the air around 11:40 p.m. Please see, this is a LIE, this is a LIE. It is visible to the naked eye, he wrote.

Problems of Radio Three

Polish Radio’s Third Program has been going through a crisis since 2015. After PiS won the elections, people generally considered to be its creators disappeared from this station – previously considered independent. They said goodbye to Magda Jethon, Jerzy Sosnowski, Anna Gac and Dariusz Rosiak. Wojciech Mann passed away, soon after him Marek Niedźwiecki “allowed himself” to play Kazik’s song “Your pain is better than mine”.

In the following weeks and months, Trójka underwent a thorough revolution. Niedźwiecki was followed by Hirek Wrona, Piotr Metz, Michał Olszański, Piotr Stelmach. Some journalists moved to the neo-Trójka – Radio 357 and Radio Nowy Świat, financed by money from fans and sponsors. Since then, Radio Three has been struggling with a sharp decline in listenership.
