Have you received such an SMS? I received it too. Many people may have already been fooled

From time to time, there is information in the media about various activities of fraudsters who, impersonating, for example, well-known companies, try to extort money or personal data from people. Recently, information about another method appeared on the Internet.

At the end of November, while on vacation, I received an unusual text message. It informed me that my parcel had already arrived at the warehouse. However, it could not be delivered to the recipient due to incomplete address details. So I was asked to confirm them.

I knew right away that something was wrong here. First of all, I recently returned the goods, but I did it via another courier company. Secondly, two days earlier I received a notification that the package had already arrived at the store. So I thought it was another scammer’s method. I also sent a text message with information about this to 808 (this is one of the ways we can report such cases).

Fake payment form

He reminded me about the case . It turns out that we are currently dealing with a phishing campaign. Its aim is to extort payment card details of customers using the services of well-known courier companies. Under no circumstances should we click on links that appear in such messages.

– The link included in the message takes the potential victim to a website that confusingly resembles the real websites of courier companies. There, under the pretense of an additional fee for re-delivery, there is a fake payment form. Cybercriminals encourage you to enter payment card details, which they use to steal money from the victim’s account – informs CSIRT NASK.

What to do if you receive such a message?

What should we do when we receive such a message? It is worth reporting any attempted fraud to CERT Polska. However, we must convey the entire message in its original form. We can do it:

  • by e-mail (cert@cert.pl);
  • on the website Incident.cert.pl;
  • by sending a free SMS to 808.

Even though much has been written about fraudsters’ methods, such cases are still worth publicizing. Unfortunately, many people still fall for this type of activity. And since they are constantly creating new methods, it is worth being careful and reminding them about the problem.
