Witold Szabłowski’s book is – as its publisher encourages – “a marriage of reportage and cookbook”. For several years, the author was looking for chefs all over the world who worked, among others, for Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein and other tyrants. He asked everyone what their principals ate at the most important moments of their reign, and then jotted down both memories and recipes. The book “How to Feed a Dictator” was recommended by “The New York Times” on its list of the most important titles in 2020: the book was published on the American market in the translation of Antonia Lloyd-Jones by Penguin Books. And now a film production will be made on its basis.
How To Feed A Dictator Sold To Hollywood
The rights to the screening of Szabłowski’s book were bought by the company “Free Assiociations”, which belongs to the American actor Channing Tatum. “This is a perfect situation, because all large companies, like Netlix or HBO, prefer to buy from people they know and who have already” delivered “large productions, and Tatum” delivered “many times” – writes the satisfied writer and adds:
Together with Maciej Musiał, we are co-producers, and I am also a co-writer. There is going to be a fictional series based on real stories from my book. I’m eating amazing! This is the first Polish reportage and probably the first Polish book (correct me if I’m wrong) sold directly to Hollywood.
YEEESSSSSSSSS!
The plot of the series will tell about an imaginary dictator whose experiences will be inspired by what Szabłowski described in his culinary reportage. The writer also said in an interview that the company belonging to the widow of Stevie Jobs was the first to buy from him the rights to the book, but in this offer Szabłowski would not have been able to work on the script.
“I really wanted to take part in this project, I thought that the chance to co-create a series based on my own book might not repeat itself. I did not sleep for a month, wondering what to do. In the end, I did not accept the offer” – he explained and added that thanks the fact that he has his agent and lawyer in the USA, the entire transaction was smoothly arranged and closed.
Let us remind you that the young actor was the first Pole to produce for the series (it was loud, in which he also played the main role). Currently, a film crew is being completed, producers are also looking for a director and a main screenwriter.
“How to Feed a Dictator” was recognized as the best cookbook in the world and in 2021 it received the “Culinary Oscar” or the Gourmand Cookbook Award.
