“I feel the same way”, “I agree”, “it’s true”. It was “rel” that was chosen as the Youth Word of the Year 2023. The expression means approval and comes from the English word “relatable”. An abbreviation is used when someone agrees with another person’s opinion or finds himself in a similar situation. The expression is also used ironically on the Internet.

“The youth word of the year 2023 is an expression of consent. Literally and metaphorically. On the one hand, it means approval of what the previous speaker said, on the other – it illustrates the harmonious cooperation of the dialogue participants. Rel also has (almost) all the features of a linguistic hit. It is global, it comes from from the English relatable ‘possible to connect with something’, it is short, functions as an independent abbreviation enabling a quick and conclusive communicative response, it is friendly because it creates an atmosphere of positivity by conveying meanings such as: ‘I agree with you’, ‘I feel the same’ “, ‘I confirm’, ‘right’, and finally – it is very popular among young people,” explains Anna Wileczek, the chairman of the jury in the plebiscite.
The victory of “rel” was determined by the number of votes received, which this year was record-breaking and amounted to over 140,000. In second place was the word “sigma”, which means a self-confident, independent and successful person. The bronze medal went to the phrase “oporowo”, which serves as an emphasis. It means “very”, “a lot”, “strongest”, “best”. In the context of work or pursuit of a goal, it indicates intensity and consistency.
The Youth Word of the Year jury awarded a special prize. What does “gives back” mean?
The jury also awarded its own prize this year. The jury chose the Polish word “gives back”. The word means that something is profitable. “Giving back in a broader sense is a universal expression of positive evaluation. What you give back does not have to be profitable in the literal sense. It is enough that it is ‘cool’ or ‘has a good vibe’ – explains Marek Łaziński.
