For millions of Poles, Christmas without the movie “Home Alone” is not Christmas. Did you know that even in the English-language Wikipedia there is a fragment about the Polish national viewing of this production?

However, we start the last episode of “POPkultura” this year with a review of cinema premieres. First up is the movie “Wonka”, in which Timothee Chalamet plays the title role. What else? Watch the episode:

It’s hard to believe, but the movie “Home Alone” turns 32 years old. It’s even harder for some people to believe that there could be no film at all. Already at a fairly early stage of production, the production budget swelled to 14.7 million dollars, and the studio demanded that it be cut by 1.2 million. The producers replied that it really couldn’t go any lower. Warner didn’t really believe it and decided to abandon the project. Fox itself benefited from this, quickly taking over the project and spending the necessary money: the final budget was $18 million.

“Home Alone” was an immediate success. In Poland, watching a movie is already a tradition

It was undoubtedly money well spent: the production earned $476.7 million in theaters around the world, making “The Hangover 2” the highest-grossing comedy of all time until the premiere. The photos were shot in 83 days – they started on February 14 and ended on May 8, 1990.

After its premiere in 1991, “Home Alone” stayed at the top of the box office for 12 weeks – from November 16 until the first weekend of February. The Christmas comedy was only degraded by the film “Sleeping with the Enemy”. And for almost three decades, the first two films about Kevin have been an annual hit (once on TVP, today on Polsat).

Two Kevins? There are more of them

The sequel premiered in 1992 and was also a huge success. So far, six titles from the “Home Alone” series have been created and can be watched today on Disney+:

  • “Home Alone” (1990)
  • “Kevin Alone in New York” (1992)
  • “Alex – Home Alone” (1997)
  • “Home Alone 4” (2002)
  • “Finn Home Alone: The Christmas Heist” (2012)
  • “Home Alone at Last” (2021)

On December 19, 2018, Google released the “Home Alone again with the Google Assistant” ad. The adult Macaulay Culkin recreates scenes from the movie “Home Alone” 28 years after the first part of the series. Ralph Foody, Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern also appeared in the spot, but in their case archival recordings were used.
