The Word of the Year 2023 has already been chosen. Not everyone in Poland may know them

Oxford University Press is the publisher of the world’s largest dictionary of the English language. Lexicographers have decided which word conquered the world this year. It turns out that the expression was also nominated for the Youth Word of the Year 2023 in Poland, but certainly not everyone knows its meaning.

It’s about the expression “rizz” used in youth slang. It is a natural ability to charm, and the word comes from the English term meaning charisma. It can also be used in the expression “rizz up” – the verb means the act of attracting, seducing or talking to someone. In turn, the PWN dictionary defines “rizz” as “a set of features that allow for a great influence on the opposite sex; charm; the ability to pick up” and, more broadly, the impression made on others.

Rizz – what does it mean? The Oxford Word of the Year 2023 has already been selected

To justify their choice, experts gave the example of TikTok, where the word has been trending strongly in recent months. As reported by the BBC, the popularizer of the phrase “rizz” is YouTuber and streamer Kai Cenat. However, the word was popularized by the actor playing Spiderman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Tom Holland. In an interview for Buzzfeed, he was asked about the “secret of his rizzu”. The star replied that there was no such thing in him.

Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, notes that a year ago the term “goblin mode” won, meaning sloppy, self-indulgent and rejection of all norms and expectations of others. The expression was the result of the pandemic. Today, the word that seems to be its opposite is winning.

Popular words in 2023. They lost to “rizz”

“The word refers to the mood in 2023. More of us are starting to open up after years full of challenges and find self-confidence,” says Grathwohl.

Also competing for the title of the Oxford Word of the Year were “rizz”, “Swiftie” – a term used by Taylor Swift fans, “de-influencing” – a trend of creators discouraging their audiences from excessive consumption, “beige flag” – a feature that warns that a potential partner is boring, “situationship” – an informal relationship, “parasocial” – a one-sided relationship between a fan and a celebrity, in which the former mistakenly believes that he has a friend in the star, “heat dome” – a weather phenomenon in which there is almost suffocating heat in a given area , and “prompt” – an instruction given to the artificial intelligence algorithm.
