It is a preparation made by her father, who died when she was eleven years old. The participant recalled that her father was a very hardworking man who they did not see very often, except on Sundays, when he prepared this ceviche. Gigi names him Brecagi in honor of her sisters Brenda (the oldest), Carolina (the middle), and Gigi (the youngest), and because her parents called them so lovingly.

“This ceviche completely reminds me of my childhood with my sisters, my father made it, he was a man who worked so much that we rarely saw him. There were Sundays when he was there and I have that memory of him cooking with my mother, they were browning the fish, the pots were clinking and I would open my door and see them cooking together.

When the father died, this recipe was no longer prepared at home until it was eventually adopted by the middle sister and she shared it with Gigi, which helped her move forward.

During her explanation of the dish, Gigi burst into tears as she revealed that this is the reason she hasn’t enjoyed cooking in years. “I have always hated cooking because it reminds me a lot of my father and so this is all very new to me.”
