The Prosecutor’s Office has reached an agreement with the former PP deputy and former mayor of Trujillo (Cáceres) Alberto Casero by which he accepts a sentence of one year and nine months in prison for the continued crimes of prevarication and embezzlement of public funds. This agreement, with which the popular leader finally avoids going to prison, also includes a five-year disqualification and the payment of compensation of almost 50,000 euros. “You are never satisfied with this, but this is what it is”Casero said at the exit of the Provincial Court of Cáceres after the agreement reached between the parties during a previous hearing that lasted just over an hour.

The magistrate has issued an oral sentence in these terms of sentence to be served after the conformity agreement. The oral sentence – the written one will be issued within a period of 20 days – declares Casero the author of crimes of prevarication and embezzlement of five public service contracts, sponsorship or agreements made between March 2017 to December 2018 in which the formality required for this purpose by regulations. Casero, assisted by the lawyer Bernardo del Rosal, He will not go to prison and must pay the Trujillo council an initial payment of almost 10,000 euros and 1,000 euros per month until the fine is complied with.

The Supreme Court judge explained that the then mayor of Trujillo entered into a series of contracts with different people and entities of service, sponsorship or agreements, failing to comply with all types of formality. In fact, the magistrate pointed out “verbal contracts or contracts without any processing or publicity are prohibited in the cases where the amount requires it, evasion of control mechanisms, direct assumption of payments for the integrity of the services that, in addition to newspapers, were provided to an entity in which the municipality was only a part; fully subsumable in the illicit act of prevarication.”

This case has its origins in the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 2 of Trujillo, which opened preliminary proceedings based on a complaint from the Prosecutor’s Office regarding contracts, agreements or conventions entered into with third parties by Casero during his time as mayor. Since Casero was a national deputy, the procedure went to the Supreme Court (TS). After leaving his record, The procedure was returned to the Cáceres judicial sphere.
