The holiday season is a time of many promotions and sales. We can buy Christmas gifts at bargain prices, but sometimes lower prices can turn out to be a trap. Why? Well, many stores reserve the right not to accept returns of goods. Is this practice legal?
When can’t you return goods? Stationary stores are not obliged to accept returns
We must remember that when we buy in a stationary store, the store is not obliged to take the goods back. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule and the situation depends on the store’s internal regulations, so before you decide to make a purchase, it is worth checking the returns policy of a given facility. However, let’s remember that the law does not oblige store owners to accept returns if the customer purchased the goods in-store.
Can promotional goods be returned? The customer has a specific time to return it
The situation is different with online shopping. In this case, we have 14 days to return the goods and it does not matter whether the product was purchased at a fixed price or on promotion or sale. However, the seller has the right to refuse to accept a return if the product shows clear signs of use or is damaged. Additionally, perishable food items, e.g. meats and dairy products, opened medicines and cosmetics, digital content, and made-to-order products, are not subject to returns. It is worth paying attention to products made to order, because in the context of St. Nicholas Day, we often choose dedicated gifts. In such a case, we must make really thoughtful purchases, because the goods cannot be returned.
