Telewizja Polska has already produced several materials in defense of its “independence” from politicians after politicians introduced fundamental changes to it a few years ago. The new government (not Mateusz Morawiecki’s, but the coalition government) announced that it would be depoliticized, which was immediately considered an attack on the media. The group of leading defenders includes – a former SLD politician, now a commentator on TVP Info.
Magdalena Ogórek on shooting miners during the PO era
Magdalena Ogórek welcomed the audience beautifully and got straight to the point without hesitation. According to Hitchcock’s overarching principle: first an earthquake and then the tension will only increase, the publicist “introduced” the material by shooting miners in 2015 (of course, during the PO era), and then moved on to defend TVP against the upcoming changes.
I greet the wonderful viewers of Polish Television as beautifully as I can in the morning. Ladies and gentlemen, do you remember 2015? Then the Civic Platform decided to shoot at the miners. One of these miners is waiting for you in the studio – she introduced the guest.
The conversation moved smoothly from the problems of agriculture to the upcoming problems of TVP. Politicians who will be the next to form the government after Mateusz Morawiecki have been announcing for a long time that Telewizja Polska will be thoroughly depoliticized and faces who have become the faces of propaganda may lose their jobs. Ogórek found a defender of TVP in the form of farmers, presented by the guest:
The Civic Platform decides to shoot miners. Do you remember that? – she asked the former miner, Tomasz Ognisty.
I’m starting to fear that the same will happen to public television. Does the Civic Coalition intend to deal with the Public Television in the same way as it dealt with the miners in 2015 by shooting at them? – the guest picked up on the narrative.
Strong people will come, they will come to take us out, I suspect they will also take us out of Telewizja Polska. Will such forceful solutions be solutions for the disobedient? – Ogórek asked rhetorically.
Tomasz Ognisty argued that both farmers and miners will defend TVP, whose demands the new government will not implement in the future:
So we have support as journalists when they take us out – she concluded with relief.
What happened in Silesia in 2015?
PiS has been arguing and repeating for years that in 2015, the Civic Platform ordered the shooting of miners. At the beginning of February, there were stormy mining protests at the headquarters of JSW. They were the result of the savings plan announced by Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa – it assumed a reduction in salaries with a six-day working week, and the suspension of various allowances and subsidies. The miners accused the company’s management of mismanagement. The problems began when the protests and strike were prolonged, and the miners, according to the police, were joined by “masked hooligans and hooligans” – they tried to force their way into the company’s headquarters. The police later had photos as evidence, showing people with club markings trying to force their way into the JSW headquarters. The attackers did not react to warning shots, and smoothbore (non-penetrating) weapons were used. The police’s actions were then explained by none other than Jarosław Szymczyk – the then commander of the Silesian police, who can now be most associated with the “grenade launcher scandal”.
The case was investigated by the prosecutor’s office several times. It ended with discontinuances and statements that “the officers did not exceed their powers,” as Joanna Smorczewska, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gliwice, said in 2016.
