On November 22, the Sejm dealt with the citizens’ project “Yes to in vitro”, restoring financing of the in vitro fertilization method from the state budget. The history of the program dates back to 2013 – then it was introduced by the government of the Civic Platform and the Polish People’s Party. The subsidy operated until 2016, and thanks to the program, approximately 22,000 children were born.
Law Justice, after winning the 2016 elections and gaining an absolute majority in the Sejm, withdrew the project. In vitro was no longer financed from the state budget, but the government proposed an “alternative” in the form of nanotechnology. This method – developed by Thomas W. Hilgers in 1991 – is intended to monitor and maintain the health of the female reproductive system, as well as help in the treatment of infertility. However, what was important for the previous government was the fact that it is based on natural methods of planning procreation and is allowed by the Catholic Church.
Some PiS MPs will support the project on in vitro
However, specialists point out that naprotechnology does not have the same effectiveness as in vitro. “It is, of course, an alternative to infertility treatment clinics, but only to a very limited extent. In most cases, however, it does not provide the same results and possibilities as treatment in infertility treatment clinics,” we read on the website of one of the infertility clinics.
The bill on in vitro currently being considered by the Sejm has the signatures of half a million people. This is the first project to be discussed by the Sejm of the new term. Last Wednesday, some PiS politicians declared their support for the bill – out of the blue. For example, party spokesman Rafał Bochenek announced: “We have never had party discipline when it comes to ideological issues, which cause some moral doubts in many people. Personally, I will vote for this project.”
Radio Maryja commentator on support for in vitro: “Betrayal of an idea”
This is why they “got hit” on Radio Maryja. Invited commentator, Ph.D. Arkadiusz Jabłoński from the Catholic University of Lublin said that the above-mentioned PiS politicians are “hostages of public opinion.” He also believes that the behavior of PiS members who intend to express their approval for in vitro reimbursement is “somewhat populist.”
The Polish public opinion has managed to convince only one side of this procedure, which is presented as a chance for parents to have their own child, and no state should deny this to anyone, but should support parents who want to have children.
– he claimed.
It didn’t end there. The Radio Maryja guest also expressed his personal theory on how in vitro fertilization should proceed. – (…) In vitro fertilization kills fetuses that will not be used to fertilize a woman – he said. – Unfortunately, today it is not treated as a serious problem. Some will call such behavior by PiS politicians political realism, while others will call it – rightly so – a betrayal of the idea that has been served so far – he said.
