Hospital food is not a delicacy. Although it must be admitted that it can be quite fancy. After all, chefs have to make a lot of effort to prepare something that is both nutritious and edible for patients for a very limited amount of money. What does it look like in reality? Inspired by the article on the website, we also asked our readers to share their culinary experiences.
Hospital food? Some chefs deserve a medal
No one who goes to hospital expects to be treated to a feast with an appetizer of shrimp, crayfish soup, lamb shank and meringue cake. Hospital food is supposed to be light, nutritious and easy to swallow. Maybe if the patient’s daily meal cost PLN 100, the chefs could go even wilder. However, the average amount is much lower, closer to PLN 25 than PLN 100. Taking into account the fact that in a pub you can buy one kebab for that much money, the employees of hospital canteens deserve a medal for including not one, but several meals in such a budget. As it turns out, sometimes they are even quite good. But “sometimes” plays a key role here.
They say medicines are supposed to work, not taste. I guess hospital food can be linked to this
– Adrian said. So it seems that if you don’t have high expectations, it’s easier to swallow what you’re served. Natalia, however, has a completely different experience as she is highly motivated not to get sick.
Fortunately, I haven’t had the dubious pleasure of staying in hospital before. But since I spent a few days after giving birth in one, my life began to be guided by the song “Daleko od nose”. The first meal I got was actually quite good and gave me hope that things wouldn’t be bad. But the next one was a chapel. The worst? Every day there is some milk soup in various versions: with rice, dumplings, barley. I swallowed because it was good for lactation, but, mother, how I was tired…
Hospital food is supposed to be nutritious. Meanwhile: Meat like MOM’s
Kasia, in turn, was most amused by serving the rice salad on a lettuce leaf. And this was the only humorous “taste”, because the rest – although edible – did not necessarily meet expectations in terms of nutritional value.
I don’t even know how to comment on this. On one plate, a rice-based salad, a slice of bread and a wheat roll to serve. Just health, right? But at least there is this lettuce leaf, like from TV commercials. To experience some luxury.
I know the budget isn’t fantastic, but the meat is like Mom’s [MOM, czyli niezbyt wartościowe mięso oddzielane mechanicznie – przyp. red.], wheat bread and margarine. Well, I don’t know if it’s that healthy
– added Ela.
Also take a look at our gallery, where we show some of our readers’ meals. The above are just examples. It is difficult to lump all hospital cafeterias into one category. It all depends on the budget and the creativity of the chefs. Some hospitals also use external catering services. Moreover, there are many stories of surprised patients who have fond memories of hospital food. What are your experiences? Similar to those shared by our readers, or maybe completely opposite?
