Already during her studies, she made her debut on screen with an episode in the series “Rodzina Połanieckich”, but, contrary to expectations, she did not make a sensation. She quickly realized that talent was not enough to make it in this industry, because the right connections were much more important. – I didn’t belong to any clique in Poland, I didn’t have the right friends, I couldn’t pretend to be someone I wasn’t. Nobody took me seriously, so I could only dream about a stage or a movie. I stood aside and took what was left after the division between other actresses my age – with bitterness in an interview with “Echem Dnia”.
Although reality turned out to be brutal, she did not lose faith in her dreams. In the summer of 1984, she decided to take a break from her daily duties, so she went on a short vacation to London. She didn’t expect that a spontaneous trip would completely change her life. – I went to England on holiday, I was curious about the world, I wanted to see another country. I had no intention of not coming back, she recalled, adding that she was then met by a Polish artist, Kaz Kanski, with whom she fell head over heels in love. After a few months of dating, they decided to move on. – I fell in love, I got married and I stayed – she explained.

For some time, she tried unsuccessfully to break into the film industry. – I decided that I would either start doing something or go back to Poland. My agent was waiting for someone to need an actress who could play a Polish woman. She could have waited for years, she said.
Finally, in 1987, she landed a role in “The Old Bailey Advocate”, after which her career skyrocketed. In the following years, she performed, among others, in “Dryblas”, “Madson” or the worldwide hit “Capital City”, and the Polish media hailed her as “a Polish star in the West”. – Suddenly everyone started admitting to me. Success has many fathers. True, I’m a Polish actress, but why didn’t anyone here give me a chance? – she asked. In 2023, Joanna Kanska celebrated her 66th birthday. Currently, he focuses mainly on theater, but he also accepts offers for screen roles from time to time. Recently she appeared, among others, in the mini series “Litvinenko” and “EastEnders”.
