The Monday edition of “Rzeczpospolita” from November 20 informs that every sixth Polish citizen plans to make purchases this year during broadly understood Black Friday (also Black Week and Cyber Monday). This is, of course, caused by great promotions, but we may be a bit surprised. And all this thanks to the Omnibus directive, which has been in force since the beginning of this year.

The revolution is coming. The seller will think twice

In previous years, it was a common practice to artificially raise prices just before the sales “madness” period and then lower them. Thus, after the discount, the products cost slightly less, or even the same during the discount period. Now the Omnibus directive comes to the aid of customers. Sellers must now quote the lowest price within 30 days. Poles are already eager to use this knowledge before making larger purchases.

And what consequences await dishonest sellers who do not accept the new regulation? The directive also introduces the threat of high financial penalties. They are imposed by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK). This applies to both stationary and online stores.

Therefore, this year’s Black Friday will be completely different than last year. The likelihood of “cheating” customers by artificially inflating prices before major discounts is reduced, because fines can reach large amounts. This will be an effective scare.

We love discounts. However, the motivations are different

Robert Biegaj, a market expert from the Offerista Group, quoted by “Rzeczpospolita” informs that it is true that we love discounts in Poland, but our motivations vary depending on the segment. According to SMSAPI research, approximately 90 percent of us buy food during promotions. Black Friday focuses on discounts on other products (not basic products), so this mechanism works slightly differently.

Although we like to take advantage of discounts and plan purchases, we are increasingly critical of the attractiveness of offers. We expect an increase in the number of purchases compared to previous years, but it will not be significant. After all, the increase in inflation that we feel in our own “pockets” is also important.
