The BBC has rescued an interview with the artist Banksy from 20 years ago in which the mysterious graffiti artist seems to reveal his first name.
Banksy’s identity has long been object of speculation on the Internetwith numerous suspicions like Robin, Robert and Robbie. Now a fragment of an interview with the most famous graffiti artist in the world has come to light in which Banksy compare his way of making artwhich consists of doing graffiti at full speed, with cooking in the microwave.
The recording is from 2003from an interview by BBC reporter Nigel Wrench, and now the cut has been revealed in a bonus episode of the BBC podcast series ‘The Banksy Story’.
This is one of the known radio interviews of the artist, whom the press usually describes as “mysterious” and “reserved.” The British journalist asks him if his name is “Robert Banks”, and the artist replies: “It’s Robbie“.
Banksy’s true identity is unknown so far, but the interview offers his followers the opportunity to hear his voice. Furthermore, in the unpublished interview, Banksy also makes defense of vandalism as art.
When Wrench asks Banksy if graffiti is vandalism and illegal, Banksy gave this advice to people: “Go out! Smash things. Have fun!”he said, adding that others, in turn, could paint over your work.
