Atopic dermatitis – what is it?
Atopic dermatitis, or atopic dermatitis, is a type of dermatosis. It is a chronic skin disease. It affects both adults and children. It is often associated with itching, lichen and other skin lesions. It is considered an incurable disease. It occurs periodically and recurs. It is also called a civilization disease.
Atopic dermatitis – causes that may contribute to its formation
It can be said that atopic dermatitis is a problem with the proper functioning of the immune system, which simply reacts poorly to the action of antigens on the skin. The body then produces a lot of IgE antibodies to fight them. This is how atopic dermatitis occurs. Most of the reasons are not fully known and cannot be clearly determined. When it comes to factors that may cause atopic dermatitis, the following can be mentioned:
- environmental,
- genetic,
- psychogenic,
- atmospheric,
- digestive,
- irritating.
Atopic dermatitis – causes that cannot be forgotten
One of the most common causes is that you have no influence on. The second important factors are environmental factors, including: dust mites and dust, pollen, environmental pollution, food and animal allergens. Fungi can also exacerbate the disease. Stress also has a negative effect. This disease occurs primarily in children, but adults also suffer from atopic dermatitis. The reasons, as you can see, are complex. There are many of them and not all of them can be fought. However, to some extent you can try to avoid them and thus reduce the risk of the disease returning or exacerbating it. Undoubtedly, immune system disorders as well as disorders in the structure and functioning of the skin also contribute to the development of atopic dermatitis. An abnormal skin microbiome will not help either. As a result of damage to the epidermis, contact with allergens or other irritating factors occurs, which may cause local development of the disease. This is where inflammation occurs. Other factors may influence the occurrence of atopic dermatitis, because unfortunately not all causes of atopic dermatitis are known.
Atopic dermatitis in infants
is much more susceptible to infections than in older children, because the epidermis itself is not yet well developed. This means that the skin does not have an appropriate protective barrier. Therefore, it dries easily and various substances or allergens easily penetrate it. The hydrolipid coat is very thin. Infants also have impaired body thermoregulation. All this means that babies’ skin cannot defend itself against harmful external factors. Typically, atopic dermatitis in children this age begins with dry skin that becomes rough. Then lumps or erosions may appear. If they then start oozing fluid, it may lead to secondary infections. Changes usually appear first on the face. The child itches, which irritates him and makes it difficult, for example, to sleep.
Atopic dermatitis in children at a later age
In older children, such changes generally do not appear on the face, but on the limbs, on the hands and feet, on the hands and around the ankles. They are usually not oozing, so secondary infections do not occur. They are more in the form of lumps and the so-called lichen. Children at this age are also more mobile, which means that abrasions and other injuries occur, which unfortunately causes secondary infections. Atopic dermatitis in children can also cause dandruff. Inflammation sometimes also leads to enlarged lymph nodes.
