The film “In Desert and Wilderness” was a cinema hit. What is the story about?
The film is set in the 1880s in Africa. The main characters are 14-year-old Staś Tarkowski and 8-year-old Nel Rawlinson. When the story begins, they are having fun carefree by the sea, eagerly awaiting the fast approaching Christmas. Tired of the absence of their fathers, busy construction engineers, they are deceived by the Mahdi’s warriors and go to the desert wasteland, falling into their trap. When the children are transported to the camp, the distraught fathers immediately set out to search for them, which is thwarted by a sandstorm. However, Staś does not intend to wait for the kidnappers’ mercy and decides to take the risk. When the right opportunity arises, he kills the warriors and, together with Nel and two black teenagers, sets out to find a way home. However, it is not that simple, because they are located in the heart of the African jungle.
The production was carried out on a huge scale, with a budget of as much as USD 4 million. Filming took place in South Africa and Tunisia from July 31 to October 23, 2000. The biggest stars of Polish cinema appeared on the screen, including: Krzysztof Kowalewski, Andrzej Strzelecki and Krzysztof Kolberger. However, the most important roles were played by Adam Fidusiewicz, who created the character of the brave Stanisław Tarkowski, and the debuting Karolina Sawka, who played the role of Nelly Rawlinson.
