They live with their parents, but they do not contribute to the bills. Experts warn

Should adult children who still live under the same roof with their parents pay them by contributing to rent, bills, etc.? Many people will be surprised, but the experts’ position on this issue is clear.

The topic was raised by a journalist from the website, who described the stories of several adults who still live under one roof with their parents. The interlocutors talked about how financial matters were divided in their case. Do they contribute to rent, shopping, bills? The answers varied. In an interview with nazwa.wp.pl, this issue was also raised by an expert, Dr. Bogdan Więckiewicz from the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Pedagogical University of Krakow.

The sociologist cited data from the European Statistical Office, according to which approximately 50 percent of young adults still live with their parents. Compared to other countries, Poland does not fare very well in this context. The smallest number of “nesters” occurs in Scandinavian countries.

Using sociological language, these people are called the so-called altricial. They live with their parents, having no spouse or children

– explained the expert quoted by WP.

Should an adult child living with his or her parents pay them?

Many of us have certainly encountered such cases. Living with your parents as an adult may generate many conflicts – such as a dispute over expenses resulting from the operation of the apartment. Some people do not pay for accommodation, food, cleaning, water consumption, electricity, etc. in their own family home. In practice, most of the costs of maintaining such a person are still covered by the parents. Of course, it is also completely different, where adult children and their parents run the house together, sharing all expenses, and living with their parents is a personal choice. How to reconcile these issues?

It turns out there is a legal solution. The portal refers to Article 91 of the Family and Guardianship Code, which states that:

§1. A child who has income from his or her own work should contribute to covering the family’s maintenance costs if he or she lives with his or her parents. §2. A child who is supported by his or her parents and lives with them is obliged to help them in the common household

– we read. What does this mean in practice? It can be stated that an adult child is obliged to pay his or her parents money for housing and maintaining the house – if he or she earns money. If he is not employed anywhere, then his payment should be working at home. At the same time, if an adult child finds a job, he or she is not exempt from the obligation to perform shared household duties.
