Tomasz Raczek saw “The Palace” by Roman Polański. 1/10 in foreign reviews “hysterical”

Tomasz Raczek watched Roman Polañski’s latest film “The Palace”. The production received very low reviews internationally. However, the critic claims that these assessments are – to put it mildly – undeserved.

he is 90 years old, but he is not thinking about retirement. However, his latest film “The Palace” does not receive very positive reviews. It is in vain to look for positive ones, and the reluctance of distributors to show a film by a director who has been associated with a sex offender for years does not help. The few viewers who had the opportunity to see “The Palace” accuse the film of being uncontrolled by anyone – including the director.

Tomasz Raczek took on the production, . He also talks about foreign assessments, which in his opinion were influenced by the current climate of political correctness, linking the man and his work with reprehensible behavior from the past.

“The Palace” by Roman Polański criticized far and wide

Roman Polañski showed “The Palace” at the beginning of September at the Venice Film Festival. The decision to allow the production of a director who is still facing allegations of sexual crimes from years ago was met with a wave of criticism. The artistic director of the Venice festival explained that the Polañski case should be separated from his new film, and this one deserves honest criticism, not outright condemnation.

This is a lack of respect for one of the greatest masters of modern cinema. You can’t approach the matter this way. You may like or dislike the film. This is not a problem, everyone has the right to express their opinion. But the problem is the way in which negative judgments are expressed – it is unacceptable and here I see a lack of respect towards Polański – said Alberto Barbera in an interview with “Screen”.

In every foreign review of “The Palace” in September, one could read about the shadows in Polanski’s past. About the fact that he raped a 13-year-old girl in 1977, fled from the American justice system and still cannot travel freely to some countries because he faces deportation. Tomasz Raczek tried to separate this matter from the film itself.

Tomasz Raczek sums up Polański’s “The Palace”.

A film critic pointed out that after watching “The Palace”, he noticed that some of the very negative reviews of the film were simply not entirely justified. “A wave of criticism… I had the impression that it was a wave of hate. There was so much reluctance in this criticism that it went beyond criticism,” he said. He rated “The Palace” as an average film.

1/10 is wrong. These are exaggerated, I would even say hysterical, assessments. (…) I rate it 5/10 – he made better films, dozens of films that Roman Polański made. This is not Polanski’s best film, he said.

He also tried to explain that “The Palace” and the chaos that the director showed in the film are an image of how he sees the current world and political correctness, which still leads to criticism of him:

Roman Polański considers ‘political correctness’ not only a certain plague of modern times, something that eats away the flavor of our life and civilization. It kills part of thinking and compassion, it kills the possibility and willingness to understand, imagine, forgive, but also plan and think about the future. Political correctness is standing still. Political correctness has caused the sin of years ago to come back and haunt him in his present life. This is socio-porn – a cross-section of society, but presented in a pornographic way. It talks about what Roman Polański feels and feels like today, what he thinks about a world that has crumbled and stinked, concluded Raczek.

Does political correctness catch up after years or does it act blindly?

Much more has been written about political correctness in recent years. The phenomenon has its own negative term: “cancel culture”. Its victims were some “famous” people who had committed morally questionable acts in the past (or even crimes, like Polanski). But “cancel culture” sometimes hits blindly and judges before the court does. He experienced it firsthand and was cleared of the charges. , the actor lost his roles for several years and faced ostracism and aggression.
