Taylor Swift plagiarized? The singer will stand trial for the song “Shake It Off”

Taylor Swift is due to stand trial over alleged 2014 song “Shake It Off”. The singer allegedly infringed copyright and copied a fragment of another text. Despite the fact that in 2018 the lawsuit was dismissed, the authors of the words that the star stole, according to them, appealed against the ruling.

Plagiarism trial. It’s about the popular fragment of the song “Shake It Off”

The singer allegedly stole a fragment of the text “Playas Gon ‘Play” belonging to the band 3LW. Its authors – Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, believe that she plagiarized the words “playas, they gonna play and haters, they gonna hate”. The artist’s work includes “the players gonna play, play, play, play, play and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate”.

According to the British daily “”, in 2018 judge Michael W. Fitzgerald dismissed the original, considering that the phrases were too “banal”. In this context, he quoted 13 songs with similar fragments, including Fleetwood Mac song.

The court rejected Swift’s request. The trial is underway with a jury

Just a year after the plagiarism lawsuit was dismissed, the court quashed the 2018 decision. The singer’s representatives denied the accusations and asked for a summary sentence, but on December 9, judge Michael W. Fitzgerald rejected Swift’s request this time.

“While there are noticeable differences between the songs, there are also significant similarities in word usage and sequence / structure,” wrote Fitzgerald, quoted by a British daily. The lawyers of the authors of “Playas Gon ‘Play” of the 3LW team emphasized that the court’s decision was right and that their clients “are getting closer to deserved justice”. Swift officials contacted by The Guardian declined to comment on the matter.
