More than two decades ago, Mole disappeared from the screens. He almost ended up like Hanka Mostowiak

It was supposed to be just a short animation presenting fabric production, but Zdenek Miler created a hero loved by all generations. Exactly 21 years ago, Krecik’s television career ended. In the last episode of the hit series, he miraculously escaped alive.

The character was created by Czech animator Zdenek Miler in 1957. He was then commissioned to create a short educational film advertising the process of creating textiles. He planned to make an animal the main character, but he did not want this character to be associated with popular productions at that time. – It wasn’t easy at all. I wanted to create a hero who would be close to children, have similar characteristics to them, be their friend, and also teach them something – in one of the interviews. He spent long hours looking for ideas, but the right one came to him completely unexpectedly.

An unfortunate stumble began the story of the iconic hero. Today, everyone knows and loves Krecik

One day, Miler went for a walk in the forest. He hoped it would inspire him. After a few fruitless hours, he resignedly headed towards home. He was walking lost in thought and at one point he tripped and fell forcefully to the ground. – I looked at my feet and saw a mole mound. Suddenly I knew. My hero will be a mole, he said. Creating the character’s appearance took many more weeks. Dissatisfied with the results of reproducing an animal from nature atlases, he decided to use only his own imagination. – The mole can’t see, and my hero couldn’t afford it. After all, eyes speak to others and help express emotions and motivations. So the mole has beautiful, expressive, inquisitive eyes. In the first drawings he also had three mustaches, but I gradually removed them, he recalled.

Ultimately, the film “How the Mole Got His Shorts” was released in 1957, causing a huge stir among viewers. However, the series that everyone knows and loves was initiated by “The Mole and the Car”, which premiered 6 years later. Compared to the “zero” episode, the characters no longer spoke, but only made sounds. Why? It was a deliberate attempt and certainly one of the reasons that determined the success of the fairy tale. – It was clear that stories about Mole would also reach other countries. Can you imagine the effort if he had to speak several languages? That’s why I chose the simplest option – he will only use interjections – explained Miler.

The last episode of the series was released over two decades ago. How did Krecik’s story end?

November 11, 2002 marks the 21st anniversary of the premiere of the last episode of the beloved series. “The Mole and the Frog” is an extremely moving and suspenseful story. The hero, together with his faithful companion, the mouse, decides to go to a disco. After joyful preparations, they get into the red car together and set off. However, the good mood does not last long.

At one point, a frog unexpectedly jumps onto the road. Mole, wanting to avoid being hit, starts braking vehemently. He manages to avoid his friend, but this causes the car to roll over. The seriously injured hero lies unconscious in the bushes. One of the frames even shows the moment when he almost gave up the ghost. Then his companions reacted quickly. Myszka called an ambulance and Mole was taken to hospital. After a long and painful recovery, he regained his strength and fitness, but he disappeared from the screens for good.
