The creators of the 6th Floor Theater appeal to name the square being built in front of the Palace of Culture and Science after Piotr Szczêsny

“The 6th Floor Theater Group appeals to all people of good will who care about the fate of our homeland to support our appeal to name the square being built in front of the Palace of Culture and Science after Piotr Szczêsny,” we read in the appeal sent to the media.

Piotr Szczęsny committed self-immolation at Plac Defilad in Warsaw in 2017. In his farewell letter, he wrote that it was an act of his protest against breaking the law in Poland by PiS politicians. He was buried at the Salwatorski Cemetery in Kraków.

Just before setting himself on fire, Piotr Szczęsny accused that “PiS has his blood on its hands”

Before he set himself on fire, Szczęsny handed out leaflets to passers-by. They also included a call “to all Polish women and men, those who decide who rules in Poland, to oppose what the current government is doing and what it is protesting against.” In the letter he left at the square, he wrote, among other things: that “PiS has his blood on its hands.”

– We say goodbye to the late. Peter. A man who is like a scream that breaks the silence. Like fire that brings out the shape of things in the darkness, as if they were absent because they were imperceptible. Screaming – arouses fear. Fire – causes fear. Death evokes fear… – said the priest during the funeral ceremony of Piotr Szczęsny. Adam Boniecki. Now the creators of the 6th Floor Theater in Warsaw, located in the Palace of Culture and Science at Plac Defilad, have issued an appeal to name the square being built in front of the Palace of Culture and Science after Piotr Szczęsny. She has already posted the text of the appeal on her Instagram: actress Aleksandra Popławska.

Full text of the appeal

“On October 19, 2017, at Defilad Square in Warsaw, Piotr Szczęsny committed an act of self-immolation in protest against the actions of the then government, against violating the principles of democracy and the provisions of the constitution, against dividing society and deepening these divisions, against the language of hatred.

He died after ten days. He was 54 years old.

He left behind a manifesto that began with the words: “I, an ordinary, gray man, love freedom above all else.” In it, he called on his compatriots to defend dignity and human rights.

Dear residents of Warsaw, Dear residents of Warsaw, respected authorities of the capital city, proud citizens of Poland! Let us remember our heroes who sacrificed their lives for the good of the Republic of Poland.
