MEF: social conflict and climate crisis caused losses of almost S/12,000 million

In the last year, the peruvian economy has faced various adverse events that have hindered its reactivation. These events have generated, together, the loss of S/11.9 billion, equivalent to 1.2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).

“The losses in product are close to S/12,000 million, we are talking about 1.2% (of GDP) which has been the cost of the shocks: social conflict, yaku, absence of the first fishing season and the water deficit “, mentioned the head of the MEF, Alex Contreras, in the presentation of the United Plan.

According to the MEF, the social conflict, which occurred in the first months of 2023 after Pedro Castillo’s attempted coup d’état, caused a loss of S/4,000 million.

While the shock caused by the El Niño phenomenon and Cyclone Yaku amounted to a loss of S/4.2 billion. The regions most affected by this weather event were those located in the north of the country.

Likewise, the non-opening of the first anchovy fishing season due to adverse weather conditions generated an impact of S/3,000 million. Likewise, the water deficit caused losses of S/700 million, mainly affecting the southern regions, which experienced droughts and a decrease in the planting of crops such as potatoes and quinoa.
