“Hell and metal. The history of the band Kat” was created thanks to the author’s many years of work on the bibliography, conversations with both KAT musicians and their families and loved ones, as well as the artistic community (around him and those in the background). Mateusz Żyła will also show readers photos and descriptions that have never been published before. Why is this book so important for the Polish music scene?
The band’s history dates back to the early 1980s. The group was then led by vocalist Roman Kostrzewski. The group was complemented by a guitarist, Piotr Luczyk, and a drummer, Ireneusz Loth. There was also bassist Piotr Jaguś and the second guitarist Ryszard Pisarski. Next to Turbo and TSA, they are included in the “Big Three of Polish Metal”, and their achievements for this genre in the country are proven by their performances alongside Metallica and Iron Maiden.
Forged in Jarocin. A clash of characters
Interestingly, the group did not start out creating metal music. At first she arranged instrumental pieces. However, thanks to Kostrzewski’s unique vocals, as well as the undoubted skills of the other members, it was their “hard playing” that gained them great fame. This came with a concert in Jarocin in 1984, when they received the highest distinction from the audience. Effect? Just two years later, they released the cult album “666” and the English-language “Metal and Hell”.
In their texts, they touched on the topics of occultism, magic and rebellion against God, which was a big controversy even in the conditions of the already crumbling communist system (officially, the group distanced itself from accusations that it had propagated them). But there were also many of them within the group. The strong characters of Kostrzewski and Luczyk often clashed with each other, and the beginning of the conflict took place in the late 1980s. Due to misunderstandings within the team in the spring of 1999, during the recording of the album “Szydercze Zwierciadło”, the second one left the group and KAT’s activities were suspended. . Both artists then formed the bands Alkatraz and Adrenalina.
Two teams. One legend
The reunion of all KAT members took place in 2002 during a guest appearance alongside Bruce Dickinson with Iron Maiden. However, it did not last long – mutual legal accusations were launched. Kostrzewski and Luczyk threw mud at each other in the context of the legal use of the band’s discography. Two separate bands were created with the name of the iconic band in their name: KAT&Roman Kostrzewski, and the guitarist Luczyk was responsible for the original name of the band. The compositions of both teams changed in the following years.
Even though Roman Kostrzewski died on February 10, 2022, his legend, and at the same time the legendary KAT, continues. It helps to take care of, among others: the above-mentioned biography written by Mateusz Żyła. It confirms that the band had all the advantages needed to achieve a global career. Their courage to create uncompromising music and strong personalities laid the foundations for the truly hellish music that is created today in the country on the Vistula.
